Listed in Costa Mesa

McMillen House is run by First Step House of Orange County, a volunteer-run nonprofit. Its website says the house is for men in their first six months of sobriety, with house rules and a 12-Step sponsor required. Call (949) 642-2941 for current rates and openings. First Step House also runs a short-term residential facility (about a 10-day stay); it is not a sober living home, so we don’t list it.

Choosing a home in Costa Mesa

Recovery homes vary a lot. California does not license sober living homes, so visit first, meet the manager, and ask how drug testing works, what happens after a relapse, what the rent covers and whether prescribed medication is allowed. Our guide to checking a sober living home has the full list. If anyone offers free rent or travel for enrolling in a particular treatment program, walk away; that is illegal patient brokering in California.

Looking at sober living options in Costa Mesa?

If you’re from Costa Mesa, staying in Orange County keeps you near family and work, but our OC list is still small. Many people from the area also look north to Long Beach or Los Angeles, where there are many more listed homes, and some find that putting a county between them and old routines helps. Our relocation guide covers the trade-offs.
